Speech, learning or behavioural concerns are often the first indicators of a possible hearing problem. These issues often arise when a child has trouble hearing. Our highly trained audiologists can diagnose, manage, and treat hearing loss.
What is pediatric audiology?
In pediatric audiology the primary focus is early detection and treatment of hearing loss. Audiologic intervention involves using specialized pediatric equipment to determine the type and degree of hearing loss and treat it accordingly. Identifying hearing levels early in a child’s life is essential for supporting development of speech and language, listening and learning, as well as social development.
What services does our team offer?
The services offered by our team vary according to the conditions, symptoms, and age of the patient. The clinician will perform developmentally appropriate tests to determine the child’s hearing levels. These tests may include behavioural tone testing, speech testing, middle ear function testing as well as electrophysiological testing such as auditory brainstem response (ABR). After the examination and diagnosis, our team will work closely with parents and guardians, and support them as they make the best decisions for their child’s hearing health journey. This may include using certain devices, such as hearing aids, to treat hearing difficulties. With accurate diagnosis and treatment by a skilled audiologist, we will support your child so that they can live typical active and full lives.

What can I expect at a pediatric audiology appointment?
When you bring your child in for a pediatric audiology appointment, you will be asked to describe what areas of concern you have regarding the child’s hearing, speech and language or balance. Be sure to ask questions in order to ensure you have the information you need. They will discuss the types of testing used to evaluate and diagnose the problem, which may be done that day or scheduled for a later appointment. At the time of the testing, our team will tell you what problems were found, as well as what method of treatment is recommended. The audiologist will provide information regarding the hearing deficit and offers insight as to why this type of issue occurs along with the success rate of the treatment options.
